Events

We've had a very exciting competition running this year called 'Going for Gold'. This incorporated athletic events as well as Sports Leaders UK 'Young Leaders' awards and was inspired by the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic games. The 4 winning Young Leaders will earn a cultural exchange trip to South Africa where they will pass on their newly acquired leadership skills to the children they meet there. Our first winner was Brad Yardy from Swinton Fitzwilliam Primary and he is now joined by Sam Carter from Redscope Primary who was recently announced as the second winner. They will be jetting off in October with the other 2 winners (yet to be named- watch this space!) in October along with the Active Regen team. For the winners interviews and pictures please see our blog www.activeregenchat.co.uk or Facebook pages.

The summer holidays programmes are now over and the kids are back to school next week, haven't the holidays flown by?! Active Regen coaches have been delivering sessions in various locations all over Doncaster, Sheffield and Rotherham. As usual the programmes were received well by the children and young people and everyone involved had a brilliant time. Below you can see a taster of pictures from the Hall Cross Doncaster programme but you can see more by visiting www.activeregenchat.co.uk or the Facebook pages.

Our 'Virtual to Reality' project has now come to an end in Broom, Rotherham after 13 very successful weeks. We delivered this in partnership with Rotherham South Area Assembly and the Safer Neighbourhood Teams. The aim of the programme was to provide diversionary activity to young people and to also increase their activity levels. The young people initially used Wii consoles to complete the 'virtual' aspect of the programme and were then encouraged to use those sports skills in real life activities. The project rolled out to the holiday programmes and a four day Virtual to Reality course was held in Dinnington in August. The project will also roll out to the Sheffield area and be available to a wider age range.

Our newest project commenced in the first week of the summer holidays- the 'Decent Homes' programme began in Conisbrough, Doncaster. This programme has been jointly funded by Active Regen, Bramall's, Wates Living Space, Henry Boot's and St Ledger Homes. The overall aim of the project is to make a positive impact on the community by providing diversionary activities in hotspot areas in order to reduce crime and anti social behaviour and also delivering health related activities to older people. You can see pictures from the first week on our blog www.activeregenchat.co.uk or Facebook pages.

What to expect from one of our programmes

All our holiday courses run from 10am until 3pm except on the first day- as we need the parents or carers to sign the consent forms we ask that you arrive for 09.45am (the course still finishes at 3pm).

Before any of the children arrive our coaches will have carried out a thorough examination of the area and filled out a risk assessment form. This is to ensure that the area in which the children will be playing sports in is completely safe for them.

The first thing the coaches do each day is take the register- they do this to make sure they know which children are attending the course and ensure that they are accounted for throughout the day.

Throughout the day the children will participate in multi-sports events -there's a wide range of sports to choose from suitable for all age groups. The sports will be both indoor and outdoor, depending on the weather! The coaches will also make sure that the participants always warm up and cool down before and after any sports to prevent injuries.

During the day the coaches will ensure children stop and have a break to have a drink. They will also have an hour lunch break where as well as eating their packed lunch they will be invited to participate in paper games such as crosswords and word searches. If they would like to bring their own non- electronic games they are more than welcome.

At the end of the holiday programme there is a small awards ceremony where all the participating children and young people will receive a certificate. Overall the children are encouraged to develop their sportsmanship skills and the coaches enforce that it is the participation which is most important and not the winning!
